Edgar Allan Poe wrote that he was attempting to achieve a “melancholic tone” in his great poem The Raven, and so put a very beautiful dead girl front and center (he reckoned death effectively conjures up melancholy in us).  Orhan Pamuk actually touched on this in his thoughtfully written book, Istanbul, in his chapter on Turkish melancholy.  Our Nymphenburg Raven, designed 1911 and hailing from Central Europe, has recently situated itself among Jasper Morrison’s Moon porcelain.  In this context, the raven ,so far from home, conjures up the haunting beauty of Poe’s masterpiece, and of the aged worn city where Pamuk lives and works.  Though, we must admit these thoughts fades rather quickly when Peter Bjorn and John’s Young Folks comes on…
